Working in the BSC

  • The Cabinet
    • Do not use open flame in the cabinet, because the heat disrupts air flow
      • Use only touchplate microburners equiped with a pilot light
      • Turn off burner when work is complete
      • Use an electrical furnace to decontaminate loops and needles or use disposable loops
    • Do not use electrical outlets or other sources of sparks in hood if flammable substances are present
    • Do not store equipment or chemicals in the BSC
    • Sash at specified opening, usually 8 inches (20 cm) or 10 inches (25 cm)
    • Only the materials you need should be inside the BSC

  • The Operator
    • When seated, have arm pits level with bottom of the window
    • Move smoothly and deliberately in and out (perpendicular to the sash) of the unit
    • Work should be conducted as far into the work area as comfortably possible - at least 6 inches (15 cm)
    • Schedule uninterrupted work times
    • Only one person should work in the cabinet at a time
    • Don't put your head inside an operating cabinet
    • Never eat, drink, and chew gum, store food, smoke in the lab, or apply cosmetics
    • Respond appropriately to all warnings and alarms

  • The Lab
    • Keep lab doors and windows closed
